Again, it will be epoxied into a hole in carbon fiber. The screw needs to go through this fitting in 3/8" thick carbon fiber. It will be pressing against another component so a spacer will not do the trick.</p><p><br></p><p>I am not finding anything. Becaus I only need one, I will cut a 3/8" long piece of 1/2" diameter stainless rod, square it on the lathe, then drill and tap it 1/4""-20.</p>Clayton Cramerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03258083387204776812noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2807403883562053852.post-44412170800749796272024-03-16T15:19:00.005-06:002024-03-16T15:19:32.748-06:00For a Great Instructor<p>It is not just that when I was recovering from my 2014 stroke, he was there often to play chess. This is smart money's generally educated guess about the future of our economy.<div><br></div><div>If you are a risk-averse person, buy Treasury bonds with long maturity.i did so in 1994. I bought $50,000 of Treasuries due<br><div>In 2016 for about $47,00. They yielded 7.5% per year ,(exempt from state income tax) and in 2016 they were redeemed for the full face value of $50,000. I wish that I had bought $200,000 worth. (I was a timid investor.)</div></div><div><br></div><div>These are as safe an investment as you can make. If the U.S. government defaults, canned food and ammunition make better investments.</div><div><br></div><div>Dropping interest rates on bonds drive investors into the stock market to get better ROI so for those prepared to take some risk, buy stocks.</div>Clayton Cramerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03258083387204776812noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2807403883562053852.post-51193395698568123772024-03-13T22:31:00.004-06:002024-03-15T04:01:29.993-06:00What Are These Called?I cannot tap carbon fiber but I can use a stainless steel insert epoxied into a hole that has a 6-32 thread inside. This gives me grip and ability to disassemble. For walls these would be the little plastic inserts that go in the wall.<div><br /></div><div>At McMaster-Carr: 18-8 Stainless Steel Twist-Resistant Hex-Shaped Inserts</div><div>for Plastics, 6-32 Thread Size</div><div><br /></div><div>Unfortunately I am having trouble finding them .1875" long. They seem to start at 0.25" OAL. I cut buy the 0.25" length and mill them to length. Carbide mill would quickly cut them to length. It just seems like a lot of work if I could find shorter. </div><div><br /></div><div>These will not be holding any real load. They mostly position parts in the only directions where there is no appreciable tension or shear.</div><div><br /></div><div>UPDATE: <a href="https://www.mcmaster.com/catalog/130/3763/91732A355">McMaster-Carr has Stainless Steel Helicoils that are .138" long.</a> While these are designed to be turned into tapped holes, I will just epoxy them into holes in the carbon fiber composite. This is definitely not what these are intended to do.</div>Clayton Cramerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03258083387204776812noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2807403883562053852.post-47625995810628103702024-03-13T12:48:00.000-06:002024-03-13T12:49:04.026-06:00Carbon Fiber Composite Does Not TapI should probably have investigated this before buying carbide drills, reamers, and taps, and 6-32 screws. (The screws are cheap and likely useable for other projects. The drills, reamer, and taps were not cheap but work very well on steel.)<div><br></div><div>The tapping process was immediately suspect; while turning in the tap, it seemed as though it was just cutting through the material. Indeed, it was. The 6-32 screws just slide through. I also verified that the 6-32 tap had a plausible major diameter: .132" which is just slightly smaller than the major diameter of 6-32 screws.</div><div><br></div><div>The right way to do this is with epoxy. This means, of course, doing it right first time; there is no opportunity to remove screw and tap a new hole since even the first one will not be useful.</div><div><br></div><div>The good news is that epoxy sticks to carbon fiber composite and steel.</div><div><br></div><div>I also managed to write gCode to cut an exact circle for the 5/8" needle bearings.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEio8V6z51rHCRqTbyl_OEI314EYp8qjXDnSq0QOcVxXOS3C69BHf4YPVv50qgu5Qh8ZzISXV5bsxN3iX4a8VSiyM5740NaScFi8pdVRHmh9QMPlJ3qrxvcL28fA4AlCAafvo8PR4CsBsfdI4e_PVYOXZkuUYwmLjNe8kSGUMg4CqJlUelixg6tYiVWqYQM" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

</div><br></div><div>And yes it is a press fit. I suspect the epoxy will sort of slide out as I push the bearing into the hole. Then apply a bit more epoxy on either side of the bearing/composite interface. (Probably a toothpick application to avoid getting any on the bearing races themselves.</div><div><br></div><div>The bearing blocks will need to be glued into the housings. The gaps between bearing holders and housing are hundredths of an inch. Epoxy should work fine.</div><div><br></div><div>I had thought of machining the setting circles of carbon fiber composite but attaching them to the axes would be a problem. The declination circle has a fixed position. That can be glued in position. The RA circle needs to be adjustable, usually by a set screw holding a low friction cylinder (usually Teflon) against the polar axis. Set screw obviously not practical. The setting circles will need to be aluminum or acetal. Both of these tap well and likely have little or no friction to carbon fiber. A set screw should hold them down just fine.</div><div><br></div><div>One of you pointed me to a company that makes precision adhesive scales which I might attach to an aluminum circle which would held in place on the axes by a set screw on Teflon. This sounds more and more attractive if they make scales in degrees and RA. (Not likely, but if not, I can upgrade my rotating table to the CNC version and write a program to cut lines and numbers.)</div>Clayton Cramerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03258083387204776812noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2807403883562053852.post-63699471291445432452024-03-13T08:38:00.002-06:002024-03-13T08:38:16.860-06:00Another Victory<p><a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.casd.695583/gov.uscourts.casd.695583.69.0.pdf"> Nguyen v. But as this is a sanguinary Law, and may seem too cruel; and as however mischievous those Creatures are with us, they may possibly change their Natures, if they were to change the Climate; I would humbly propose, that this general Sentence of <span style="font-style: italic;">Death</span> be changed for <span style="font-style: italic;">Transportation</span>.</p><p style="margin: 0.5ex 0px; text-indent: 1.5em;">In the Spring of the Year, when they first creep out of their Holes, they are feeble, heavy, slow, and easily taken; and if a small Bounty were allow’d <span style="font-style: italic;">per</span> Head, some Thousands might be collected annually, and <span style="font-style: italic;">transported</span> to Britain. There I would propose to have them carefully distributed in St. James’s Park, in the Spring-Gardens and other Places of Pleasure about London; in the Gardens of all the Nobility and Gentry throughout the Nation; but particularly in the Gardens of the <span style="font-style: italic;">Prime Ministers</span>, the <span style="font-style: italic;">Lords of Trade</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">Members of Parliament;</span> for to them we are <span style="font-style: italic;">most particularly</span> obliged.</p><p style="margin: 0.5ex 0px; text-indent: 1.5em;">There is no human Scheme so perfect, but some Inconveniencies may be objected to it: Yet when the Conveniencies far exceed, the Scheme is judg’d rational, and fit to be executed. Thus Inconveniencies have been objected to that <span style="font-style: italic;">good</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">wise</span> Act of Parliament, by virtue of which all the Newgates and Dungeons in Britain are emptied into the Colonies. It has been said, that these Thieves and Villains introduc’d among us, spoil the Morals of<a id="BNFN-01-04-02-pb-0133" style="color: #004071;"></a> Youth in the Neighbourhoods that entertain them, and perpetrate many horrid Crimes: But let not <span style="font-style: italic;">private Interests</span> obstruct <span style="font-style: italic;">publick Utility</span>. What then? Is not Example more prevalent than Precept? And may not the honest rough British Gentry, by a Familiarity with these Reptiles, learn to <span style="font-style: italic;">creep</span>, and to <span style="font-style: italic;">insinuate</span>, and to <span style="font-style: italic;">slaver</span>, and to <span style="font-style: italic;">wriggle</span> into Place (and perhaps to <span style="font-style: italic;">poison</span> such as stand in their Way) Qualities of no small Advantage to Courtiers! That is not like a .45 or a 9mm of course but if you can make several solid hits because the recoil is so low and you can afford to go through 200 rounds a month in practice, I suspect few criminal attackers are going to take three or four solid hits and say, "Only 8" penetration. I will continue the attack!"<div><br></div><div>Again: Cramer Rule: the mouse gun you have with you is more effective than the custom race gun in 10mm that is too heavy or bulky to put in your pocket without printing so well that blind people can see that you are carrying. To renew my Enhanced Carry License, Canyon County is insisting on my Certificate of completion of the required course because they believe some counties were issuing Enhanced without the Certificate.<div><br></div><div>Boise County, which first issued my Enhanced license, cannot find the certificate and shows signs of serious record keeping confusion so perhaps Canyon County's concern on this matter is not without merit. So I took the class again from Terry Allen Hoover who is a <b>great </b>firearms instructor as well as my friend. (I will plug his next class shortly.)</div><div><br></div><div>Today at the range he worked with me on basic technique with revolvers (with which I have never had any formal marksmanship training). He also showed me a technique he learned from Obi Wan Kenobi where you keep your pistol centerline with your solar plexus and pivot your body until your sagitta aligns with target sagitta. I have never seen this discussed anywhere and it works. My Browning Hi-Power at 25 yards on humanoid metal plates was at least as good as conventional sighting and faster.</div><div><br></div><div>I also finally had the chance to shoot my new Walther PPKS .22LR. Using the sagittal technique, at least 25 of 30 shots hit the metal plates and at a speed that I found astonishing. Remember that accuracy is not just incapacitating someone who intends you death or great bodily harm, but also avoiding hitting bystanders.</div><div><br></div><div>The American Eagle standard velocity hollow points ammunition had a couple of jams (not sure if these were ejection or feeding jams) but otherwise they operated the mechanism just fine. A developer wants a big parcel rezoned from agricultural to R3 (three homes per acre). This is contrary to the County's Master Plan and directly contrary to the Canyon County Zoning Ordinance. The roads leading to this 500+ home development are two lane and sometimes suffering from cattle and sheep problems. These roads are already pretty busy as this area has grown, with the occasional gruesome traffic accidents. Construction trucks are already a problem because they sometimes jackknife making the turn from highway 44 to Lansing Drive.</div><div><br></div><div>So, the developer and what were obviously but not openly his employees spoke first, about eight witnesses only one from Canyon County.</div><div><br></div><div>Then many dozens of opponents spoke. Who would have known what skilled researchers and eloquent speakers a bunch of farmers can be?</div><div><br></div><div>"On p. 510 of the Middleton Memorandum of Understanding" one speaker identified what was a curious and suspicious sentence. Another farmer explained how she and her parents for "entertainment" would spend winters watching cars attempting to climb Lansing's hill. (It is pretty steep and when semis try to haul building materials in, it will be similarly entertaining or perhaps terrifying.)</div><div><br></div><div>I think the Planning Commission got the message and they were asking good questions.</div><div><br></div><div>They may be deplorables wearing baseball gaps, worn blue jeans, and ZZ Top beards but the local schools clearly accomplished something.</div>Clayton Cramerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03258083387204776812noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2807403883562053852.post-73644174245781196862024-03-07T17:48:00.002-07:002024-03-07T17:49:38.420-07:00Our Current House Sold TodayCash buyer.
